Program Overview
The Programa de Conservacion de Tortugas Marinas Riviera Maya - Tulum (Riviera Maya - Tulum Sea Turtle Conservation Program) has protected nesting females, clutches, and hatchlings along the Quintana Roo coast since 2002. It is operated by Flora, Fauna y Cultura de Mexico, A.C. (FFCM), a non-profit civil association, in partnership with the Marine Turtle Foundation and local communities.

Flora, Fauna y Cultura de Mexico (FFCM)
Flora, Fauna y Cultura de Mexico is a non-profit civil association (asociacion civil sin fines de lucro) dedicated to conserving key species and ecosystems and supporting community development in Quintana Roo. Since 2002, FFCM has operated the Riviera Maya - Tulum Sea Turtle Conservation Program, recognized nationally and internationally for its track record and results.
The program's general objective is to contribute to the conservation, research, and recovery of sea turtle species that arrive on the coasts of Quintana Roo. Teams protect nesting females, clutches, and hatchlings through field camps (campamentos tortugueros) staffed by experienced tortugueros and volunteers from around the world.
Marine Turtle Foundation Partnership
The Marine Turtle Foundation supports this program through volunteer recruitment, public education, fundraising, and international outreach. Beaches Protected by the Program
The program operates across 13 nesting beaches in the municipality of Tulum and the wider Riviera Maya, including:
- Xcacel - Xcacelito (Campamento de Xcacel)
- Punta Venado, Paamul, and Chemuyil-Chemuyilito
- Xel-Ha, Punta Cadena, Tankah, and Kanzul
- Cahpechen-Lirios Balandrin, Yu-Yum, and San Juan
- Canakihuic and Aventuras DIF
Species protected include the green turtle (Chelonia mydas), loggerhead (Caretta caretta), hawksbill (Eretmochelys imbricata), and occasionally the leatherback (Dermochelys coriacea).
Volunteer in Campamentos Tortugueros 2026
FFCM recruits volunteers each year for night patrols, nest protection, hatchling releases, beach cleanups, and environmental education at the turtle camps. Available months typically include July, August, September, and October. Minimum stay is one month for general volunteers, two months for service learning and professional internships.
